After it was destroyed by the Syracusans Mozia (378 a. C.), Phoenician colony on the Gulf Stagnone, an 'other naval base, Lilybaeum, established just to the south of the first, on the promontory of the same name, si affermò come attivo centro commerciale e divenne poi uno dei principali obiettivi della guerra tra Cartagine e Roma, which took possession after the naval victory of the Egadi which ended the First Punic War (241 a. Lapsed with the empire, was destroyed by vandals (sec. WE) and then passed to the Arabs who, for its strategic location, they called Marsa Ali (Port of Ali) from which the present name. Under their rule, as under those subsequent Norman, Swabian, agioina, Aragonese, still maintained some commercial importance, which protect against raids, Charles V the armed himself with a castle and defense works.

A new impetus came after the commercial 1773 when the Englishman John Woodhouse began the industrial processing of fine local wines, followed by other courageous precursors which created a thriving wine industry. Among them, in 1832, the Calabrian Vincenzo Florio, in addition to establishment of Marsala and Palermo, gave rise, for the transport of goods by sea, a shipping company, the son Ignatius would, in 1865 merged with the Genoese company Raffaele Rubattino, creating the glorious Italian General Navigation.

Chosen by Giuseppe Garibaldi as a staging of his expedition liberating, May 11 1860 Marsala land saw the phalanges of the Thousand and begin the march that was to put an end to the legendary Bourbon kingdom of the Two Sicilies.

    • There are tré small yards and two slipways for vessels up to motor-sailer 50 tonnes.

    • Two workshops for repair of internal combustion engines.
  • Waterworks
    • On the dock Piazzale dei Mille and that of Via dei Mille there are water intakes for the water supply to the ships that can be done during daylight hours only in limited quantities especially in the summer.
  • Bunkering
    • A mechanical supply of fuel for trawlers and motor-sailer with power of embarkation is situated on the quayside by the Thousand, owned by AGIP. More supply is located on the east side of the square of the Thousand, with power on the crest of the platform itself and the head of the hammer and owned by AGIP.

  • Chorography
    • Marsala lies in the plains to the east and south-east of Cape Lilybaeum or Boeo. To the north of the city stand clusters of salt and the windmills of salt. The port, artificial, is bounded by two curved piers:
    • Quay
      • M long. 460; only a portion of m. 50 is quay and you can be linked with small ships. The harbor entrance is wide m. 200.
    • Marina
      • Availability 150 boat people; bottom up 4 mt. A mile 5,5 approximately north of Cape Lilibeo there is a mark indicating the limit of safe water.
